Experimental/Electronic

Daedelus / Materiale Per Tre Esecutori E Nastro Magnetico
Label. Trident
Disc. EX
Cover. VG+
$300

From 1974 comes this avant garde record from Itay. Listening to the band’s record of the previous year would give no clue as to what was to follow. The 1973 offering is a nice bit of jazz rock, but this album turns up the weirdness factor to skyhigh levels- incorporating musique concrete techniques and electronics. From white noise to opera singing, this is full of surpirises and is a challenging listen. On the Trident label. Unsurprisingly, this record is mentioned on the Nurse With Wound list.

Grand Magic Circus

Grand Magic Circus / Le Grand Mechant Cochon
Label. Saravah
Disc. EX
Cover. EX
$ 70

French theatre group. Not sure what the content is because my French language skills are so bad but there’s lots of talking and a bunch of singing. A couple of songs are interesting in a warped cabaret sort of way. This record is on the Nurse With Wound list.

Gruppen

Various / Musikalische Gruppen Improvisation
Label. Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Musik
Disc. NM
Cover. NM
$140

Members of Xhol Caravan and Brosselmachine and others making a highly avant-garde Krautrock album. Don’t expect riffing, this is minimal drones and electronics. Extremely cerebral, very rewarding.

Audiopoems

Henri Chopin / Audiopoems
Label. Tangent
Disc. EX
Cover. EX
$200

Released in 1971, this album from Henri features his renowned sound poetry heavily worked-on by tape manipulation. There’s some tripped-out results that really speak to the subconscious on this groundbreaking LP.

Musique Experimentale

Various / Musique Experimentale Vol 1
Label. BAM
Disc. EX
Cover. EX
$80

1976 pressing of this musique concrete compilation with tracks from Mache, Vandelle, Philippot, Ferrari and Boucourechliev. All recordings were made by the GRM (le Groupe De Recherche Musicales) under the guidance of Pierre Schaeffer.

Sequenza

Ian Bonighton / Sequenza
Label. Move
Disc. NM (Unplayed)
Cover. NM
$100

The only recorded compositions by renowned Australian Avant Garde composer before he died young in the UK in 1975. Experimental works in Tape, Percussion, voice and organ. Dead stock copy. Double LP.

Mandalas

Limbus 4 / Mandalas
Label. OHR
Disc. EX
Cover. VG+
$200

The less noisy and slightly easier to find second album (those still very hard to find!) from this highly experimental Krautrock outfit. Their first album was with the band name Limbus 3. This record is grounded with the use of lots of acoustic and ethnic instruments to create their beautiful trance-like sounds. Not a cosmic record like many of their Ohr labelmates, this is deeply spiritual, ancient music along the lines of Yatha Sidra, Kalacakra or Between. No balloon, unfortunately. But really, the balloon is almost never included.

Casse-tete

Bernard Bonnier / Casse-tete
Label. Amaryllis
Disc. EX
Cover.EX
SOLD

Canadian musique concrete from 1984 from the man who twiddled knobs on Pierre Henry’s amazing Corticalart III. Bonnier’s brand of experimental is influenced by disco and so the record sounds like a waaayyy more flipped out version of Telex or late 70′s Kraftwerk, or Yellow Magic Orchestra. Don’t expect synth pop though, this is still very experimental! A record for very adventurous DJs and folks with an interest in proto techno.

Bel Canto

Pascal Comelade / Bel Canto
Label. Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L’acier
Disc. VG+
Cover. VG+
$60

Fantastic French experimental LP by a composer known for working with children’s toys as instruments. It’s hard music to describe but it has a really unique minimal yet lyrical sound. A really great 80s record!!

Aqsak Maboul

Aqsak Maboul / Un Peau De L’ame Des Bandits
Label. Crammed/Recommended Records
Disc. EX
Cover. NM
$70

Second album from Belgian avant-rock RIO (Rock In Opposition) band founded by Marc Hollander from Cos (who had some excellent albums of almost disco prog produced by Marc Moulin of Placebo/Telex). Aqsak Maboul’s music is a mix of prog, jazz, experimental music and opera. I suppose Henry Cow is a good starting point and, not coincidentally, Fred Frith and Chris Cutler play on the LP. The record has a moody, dark feel which goes with the cover art very well.

Whitenoise

White Noise / An Electric Storm
Label. Island
Disc.
Cover. EX
SOLD

Legendary UK electronics from Delia Derbyshire, David Vorhaus and Brian Hodgson. Phenominal LP! Unfortunately this copy has a small warp that causes a jump on the first track. You may be able to adjust your tone arm to compensate. I don’t know… Otherwise the disc is near mint. Cover is Excellent. Make me an offer.

Dick Hyman

Dick Hyman / The Age of Electronicus
Label. EMI Stateside
Disc. VG+
Cover. VG
$35

Groovy electronics from the master. Such an amazing take on Give it up or turn it loose. What a tune! Also has the great Hyman original Kolumbo. Rare Australian copy. Heavy foxing on reverse. Light scuffs on disc. Plays fine.

Ros Bandt

Ros Bandt / Soft & Fragile
Label. Move
Disc. NM
Cover. NM
$30

Second LP from Australian experimental composer Ros Bandt. Percussive sound sculptures in Glass and clay. Similar to her great Improvisations in acoustic chambers LP.

Ron Geesin

Ron Geesin / Patruns
Label. Ron Geesin Products
Disc. VG+
Cover. VG+ (Cut-out hole)
$70 AUD

1975 UK release of solo grand piano improvisations performed by reacting to the patterns of the black and white keys, according to the liner notes. Interesting and rare document by this chap who released a few KPM library records and did a great record with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.

MEV/AMM

MEV / AMM – Live Electronic Music Improvised
Label. Mainstream
Disc. VG+ (Superficial scuffs, plays great)
Cover. VG+ (Ringwear/discolouration although very thick laminated gatefold cover still looks impressive)
SOLD

Killer droning avant garde from two of the finest groups of the late 60s/early 70s. MEV featured a worldwide cast of stars: Alan Bryant, Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum & Ivan Vandor. AMM was Britain’s top experimental group with Cornelius Cardew, Lou Gare, Christopher Hobbs, Eddie Prevost & Keith Rowe. Both groups at the peak of their powers, a very awakening record.
